How long does sleep inertia last?
Sleep inertia typically lasts 15–30 minutes, though it can extend to 60 minutes and, in severe cases after deep sleep deprivation, performance impairment may persist up to 3.5 hours.
Average duration
A 2024 PLOS One nationwide study (Han et al.) reported a mean inertia of 15.8 minutes among adults. Most people are functionally normal within 30 minutes.
The long tail
Trotti (2017) documented cases where reaction-time impairment on cognitive tasks persisted up to 3.5 hours. This is most common after waking from N3 slow-wave sleep or after sleep deprivation.
Shortening it
Bright light, movement, and cognitive demand all shorten sleep inertia. ByeBed's missions activate all three.
