Can naps replace night sleep?

No. Naps supplement night sleep but cannot replace it. Night sleep delivers the full architecture of N3 deep sleep and REM cycles that the brain requires for memory, immune function, and emotional regulation.

What naps deliver

Short naps (10–20 min) boost alertness. Longer naps (60–90 min) provide some REM and slow-wave sleep. But neither replicates the structured cycling of overnight sleep.

The polyphasic myth

Schedules like 'Uberman' or 'Everyman' (multiple short naps) have been tested and shown to cause cognitive decline. Long-term polyphasic sleep is not sustainable for most people.

Best use of naps

Mid-afternoon (1–3 PM), 10–20 minutes, as a supplement on days you need an extra boost. Not a replacement for nighttime consolidation.
