What time should I wake up?

The best wake time is the one you can hold consistently every day, including weekends, that gives you 7–9 hours of sleep. The exact clock time matters less than the regularity.

Consistency beats clock time

Research consistently shows that regularity of wake time predicts sleep quality and health outcomes more than the absolute hour. A consistent 7 AM is better than alternating 5 AM weekdays and 10 AM weekends.

Match your chronotype

Forcing a 5 AM wake on a night-owl chronotype creates social jet lag and chronic sleep debt. Pick a time that aligns with your natural tendency where possible.

Total sleep matters

Hirshkowitz et al. (2015) recommend 7–9 hours for adults. Back-calculate your wake time from your latest reliable bedtime + 7–9 hours.
