Why is REM sleep important?
REM sleep consolidates emotional memories, regulates mood, and supports creativity and problem-solving. Adults typically spend about 20–25% of total sleep time in REM.
Memory and emotion
REM is when the brain integrates emotional content with existing memories. It is essential for processing the day's experiences and resolving emotional reactions.
Creativity
Many problem-solving and creative insights emerge after REM-rich sleep. Walker (2017) reviews experiments showing 'sleep on it' actually works — REM helps the brain reorganize relationships between concepts.
REM-rich sleep
REM concentrates in the second half of the night. Cutting sleep short (waking early) costs disproportionate REM. Alcohol suppresses REM. Both contribute to mood and cognitive deficits.
