Can you have severe sleep inertia?

Yes. Severe sleep inertia ('sleep drunkenness') involves confusion, impaired coordination, and inability to function for an hour or more after waking. It is most often linked to insufficient sleep, sleep disorders, or alcohol/sedative use.

Symptoms of severe inertia

Disorientation, slurred speech, slow movements, inability to make simple decisions, lasting 30 minutes to several hours after waking.

Common causes

Chronic sleep deprivation, idiopathic hypersomnia, untreated obstructive sleep apnea, and sedating medications all increase the risk. Alcohol within 3 hours of bed is a common trigger.

What to do

Audit sleep duration, schedule, and substances first. If severe inertia persists despite 7+ hours of clean sleep, consult a sleep specialist.
