Does vibration wake you up better than sound?
For most people, sound is more reliable than vibration alone. But combination (vibration + sound) wakes more consistently than either alone, especially for heavy sleepers.
Vibration only
Wrist-based vibration alarms (smartwatches) work for light sleepers but often fail for deep N3 sleep. The signal does not produce enough cortical arousal.
Sound only
Standard alarms work but can be muffled by earplugs or partners' presence. Loud alarms also trigger startle response.
Combined
Vibration + sound delivers two sensory channels. Phones placed under the pillow combined with audible alarms wake heavy sleepers more reliably.
Tired of hitting snooze?
