What's the 5 AM Club?

The 5 AM Club is a concept popularized by Robin Sharma in his 2018 book of the same name. It advocates waking at 5 AM and spending the first hour on personal growth (exercise, learning, planning).

The framework

Sharma's '20/20/20' rule splits the first hour: 20 minutes intense exercise, 20 minutes reflection or planning, 20 minutes learning (reading or audio). The premise: morning compounds over decades.

What's supported by science

The CDC and Walker (2017) endorse consistent wake time and morning bright light. The specific 5 AM clock time is arbitrary — what matters is matching your schedule to your chronotype and getting 7–9 hours of sleep.

Practical caution

Forcing 5 AM if you naturally fall asleep at midnight is just sleep deprivation. Adjust bedtime earlier first, then shift wake time gradually.
